AUTUMN VOGUES--FROCKS AT THE RACES

The predominating note of yesterday’s racing at Trentham, the first dav of-the AVellington Racing Clubs autumn meeting, was the I ) e ilect weather, and though there was not a very large attendance in the morning, many more people came in the afternoon, and the day was a most successful one in every way. Dresses were of infinite variety. Many women, afraid to trust the sun, were in almost winter garb; others. Imping for the best, wore silks ami wide straw hats. There was a number of most attractive new autumn outfits, which showed a strong leaning toward tight-fitting tailored dresses, with shoulder-line widened bycapes and epaulets, and small hats made to match. The universal popularity of brown and blue was particularly noticeable, with black, grey and fawn as relief in the composition of the picture. Many beautiful whole skins, of fox of various countries, stone marten and sable, the former with heads and bushy tails, adorned the shoulders of their fortunate possessors; and some lovely fur coats were worn. The beige-dyed squirrel with narrow skins worked into vandyked designs make a most becoming and attractive form of wrap, and are said not to be as heavy as most fur coats. A welcome addition to the comfort of racegoers has been provided by the opening-up of the tea-room in the kiosk, to where the new totalisator has also been moved. At the entrance to the tea-room a huge weeping ash has been trimmed into the form of an umbrella, and a seat round its trunk is a delightful resting-place. The garden bordering the perfectly-kept lawn is full of bright autumn flowers, and a pleasanter place to stroll between the races than under the trees at the back of the. stands would be hard to imagine.
