PACT WITH POLAND
Credit Given Herr Hitler A MOMENTOUS EVENT London, January 29.' The “Daily Mail’s” Geneva correspondent says that tbe pact between Germany and Poland is regarded in League circles as one of the most important events since the war. Much credit is given to Herr Hitler for removing one of the major obstacles to an understanding as to armaments aud general conciliation. The “Manchester Guardian’s” Geneva correspondent says that official Polish explanations suggest that the pact is the culmination of'dissatisfaction with M. Paul-Boucour’s policy and the French Government’s weakness, especially the acceptance of the Four-Power Pact; also the fact that France continually ignored Polish wishes.
Poland also regards the League sceptically owing to its cajiitulation to Japan. The Poles contend that tbe League’s failure was due to the weak ness of the Western Powers, causing a belief that they could not offer support in emergencies, which again is obvious in tlie case of Austria. Accordingly, the Poles must protect themselves. DOUBT IN RUSSIA Is Germany Sincere?' Moscow, January 29. The "Izvestia” throws some doubt on Germany's sincerity in signing the Polish Pact. It says that Herr Hitler’s determination in sign ng must etill forth the qucsi un whether it means a real renunciation by Germany or is merely a political manoeuvre; also what compensation Germany hopes to receive for the renunciation, and at whose expense.
