Excitement was caused on the main Howick road, near the Howick school, shortly after 3 o’clock on Sunday afternoon when a taxicab caught fire. It was quickly stopped and the occupants alighted, but for some time the owner and willing assistants fought an unavailing battle with the flames. Rugs were thrown over the engine, but these and earth and sods proved useless. Eventually the use of an extinguisher, lent by a passing motorist, checked the outbreak, which was prevented from spreading to the bodywork of the car. The engine and surrounding paintwork, however, were badly damaged, and the car had to be towed away.
