RED CROSS SOCIETY

Care of Ex-Soldier Patients WELLINGTON EXECUTIVE The kindly interest which various firms, organisations, and private citizens have taken in the welfare of exsoldier patients under treatment at the Red Cross Home, Hobson Street, was referred to by the chairman of the I executive of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society, Mr. A. H. Bath, at yesterday’s meeting. He specially mentioned the Hataitai Ladies’ Guild and League of Mothers for concerts given during the winter months, the members of the Rover Troop for taking cot cases out, the management of picture theatres and Opera House for free entertainment of patients, the Wellington Wrestling Committee for tickets to its various exhibitions, the Wellington Racing and Trotting Clubs for complimentary tickets, all the visitors who had preserved kindly interest during the year, and Miss Boole for monthly gifts of flowers.

An invitation was received from the Waipukurau committee to the annual garden fete to be held at Pukeora Sanatorium on December 20. It was resolved that the treasurer and secretary represent the centre. This visit, it was said, would afford an opportunity to discuss matters of general interest with the medical superintendent in regard to Red Cross work at, the sanatorium.

The medical superintendent of the Pukeora Sanatorium reported that during the month visits had been paid by the following Red Cross sub-centres Waipukurau, Hastings, Waipawa, Porangahau, Napier, Wallingford, and Hatuma. On these occasions comforts in the form of fruit, preserves, etc., were brought and distributed. In addition many gifts of literature, etc., had been sent through the Red Cross Society. It was estimated that through these channels the gifts flowing in to the sanatorium to the patients amounted to approximately £7OO a year.

The hon. secretary of the women’s committee reported that during the month the committee met at regular intervals, packing and distributing the usual comforts to hospitals and sanatoria in the district. Some 275 Christmas gifts have been prepared, and will be forwarded to the patients in time for the festive season.

The joint committee of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Spciety was reported to be functioning satisfactorily. To date the sum of £53/10/had been disbursed on comforts for exservicemen and their dependants presenting requisitions from the War Relief and Returned Soldiers’ Associations.
