TRADING COUPONS

Company’s Alleged Breach SLOGAN COMPETITION A charge of redeeming a trading coupon otherwise than in conformity with' the provisions of section 4 of the Trading Coupons Act, 1931, laid against Jollaud’s Ltd., an incorporated company, was heard before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The information was laid in respect to a slogan competition conducted by defendants in respect to a particular brand of toothpaste. Entrants were required to send in a toothpaste packet witli each entry, and prizes ranging from £2OO to 10/- were promised for successful competitors. ’The question to be decided was whether a trading coupon which allowed a person to enter for a competition in which cash prizes were awarded contravened the Act by conferring a benefit other than an unconditional return in money. The prosecution was conducted by Mr. O. Evans-Scott, and Mr. S. A. Wlren represented defendant company. Mr. Scott said that the facts of the case were, with one exception, the same as in the case against Smith’s Potato Crisps, New Zealand, Ltd., heard by Mr. Page last year. In the latter ease the prizes awarded were articles and not money, but two of the packets in which tiie company's product was sold were necessary to enter for a missing word competition. In that case it had been held that the packets were coupons within the meaning of the Act. After hearing argument by both sides, the magistrate reserved his decision.
