SANDERS CUP TRIALS
Events During Week-end SAILING AT PLIMMERTON Trials to select club nominees for the Wellington Sanders Cup trials were held by the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Association and the Royal Port Nicholson Yet Club during the week-end. • The Evans Bay Club trial on Saturday afternoon started from the clubhouse and finished off the Clyde Quay Wharf. There were three competitors—Betty (P. Harlen in charge). Kitty (W. Sharp), and Idono (F. Harlen). Betty got the best Start, and put up a very good performance in the light weather. She arrived at the Coromandel buoy approximately smm. ahead of Idono. Kitty apparently go into some light patches near Balena Bay. On the'run down to Clyde Quay Betty increased her lead very slightly trom Idono, and finished an easy first. Light weather also prevailed tor the trial on Sunday morning. In this contest Kitty was sailed by I’. Harlen, Betty by W. Sharp, mid Idono by 1., Harlen. The course comprised a run before the wind to Jerninghain beacon, a lead across to Fraser’s Rock, and a beat back to the Evans Bay Clubhouse. Kitty and Idono gave a very level performance on the run down. Kitty rounded Jerningham slightly in the lead, with Betty last. On the lead across to Fraser’s Rock Kitty increased her advantage by about Imm., but ou rounding up failed to maintain her position. The trial was eventually won By Betty by a fairly narrow margin, will Idono second, and Kitty a very close third. , .. , Only two boats, Lavina and Sue-lem, competed in the R.P.N.Y.C. trials. In the morning Lavina won b.v Ijmin.. although at one stage Sue-lem nearly caui’Tit her. Lavina won again in the afternoon by about half a minute, after an exciting finish. Nigel Blair was in charge of Lavina, and “Boy White sailed Sue-lem. Events at Plimmerton. The Plimmerton Boating Club sailed its first handicap race on Saturday, in fine weather, and with a light breeze. Seven boats started, including Avalon from Paremata, all getting away well together. , Huia. after securing a good lead in
the first round, wus unfortunate in not locating the buoy, and lost till the advantage she had gained before rounding. After a splendid race the boats crossed the finishing line in the following order:— Clyde, Avalon, Huia. Kai Ora, Torment, Watti and Corsair.
