CITY AND SUBURBAN

Happenings About the Town INCIDENTS, OBSERVATIONS A collection taken up at the Kilbirnie Reserve on Saturday afternoon in aid of the funds of the Kilbirnie Cricket Club resulted in a sum of £3 6/- being received. During the course of the Mayor’s speech at the opening of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s season at the boat harbour on Saturday afternoon, a small boy who was rather indiscreet in approaching too close to the edge of the concrete wall suddenly found himself in the water. His plight was quickly seen by a number of onlookers, and a number of men rushed to his assistance. Mr. C. Prince, a well-known member of the club, was first to reach him. and with little ado lifted a very bedraggled and wiser lad to “terra firma.” If people injured in street’ accidents had on them cards describing their injuries a young entrant in the St. John Ambulance Brigade competitions on Saturday would have scored higher marks than he did. The test consisted of attention to a person injured in an imaginary accident. As it was impracticable to supply an injured person, a sound boy lay stretched on the floor with a card bearing a description of his stkiposed injuries. One of the first duties of a person at an accident Is to send to the nearest doctor a description of the casualty and summon bls assistance. For the purposes of the competition, instead of the message being actually sent away it was to be written out and given the judge. This young student of first aid. however. made use of the card be found already written out on the body and handed it to the nearest doctor—-his judge.
