BOYS’ BRIGADE
Annual Demonstration Tlie accomplishments of the Wellington Boys’ Brigade were publicly displayed last night at the Drill Hall, where the annual inspection and demonstration was held. Altogether about a "hundred boys paraded and presented a two-hours’ varied programme. Tlie sounding of the “Reveille opened the proceedings, and was followed bv the singing of two verses of the Hundredth Psalm by the boys and a prayer by the chaplain, the Rev. E. N. ■ Goring. The chief event on the programme. the general salute, inspection by Lieutenant-Colonel G. Lyon, M,C., and march past, preceded a demonstration of platoon drill. Humour was introduced by burlesque drill, “Prehistoric Parade,” the boys, who were dressed in sacks, being finally chased from the floor by two indescribable “animals.” Physical drill to music, a handball game, a fire drill display during which several “suffocated” boys were rescued with ropes and ladders from the upper floor, a humorous sketch which gave an opportunity for the display of first aid skill and the singing of “Jubilate Deo” by the whole battalion, while four boys held forth shields emblasoned with the words “Discipline,” “Self-respect,” “Obedience,” and “Reverence,” were other items. Mr. F. Scott Miller, who was chairman, informed those present that last year only throe companies were at the inspection, but this year there were eight. That growth was not confined to Wellington, for instead of the 29 in New Zealand last year there were now--57. He announced an apology from Mr. W. G. Wohlmaun, Commissioner of Police, who was to have inspected the battalion with Lieut.-Col. Lyon, but who was out of Wellington. Lieutenant-Colonel Lyon congratulated the boys and their officers on the display, and described the movement as one of the finest in New Zealand at present. He reminded them that it was the brigade’s jubilee year, and quoted a message from the King to the brigade in England. The following promotions were announced bv the Dominion secretary, Mr. R. H. Hill:—-Ist Wellington Company, Corporal Deer to sergeant; 2nd Wellington Company, Lance-Corporal King to staff-sergeant. Corporal Hadley to sergeant: 3rd Wellington Company, Privates Jamieson and Niven to lance-cor-porals; Ist Petone Company, Privates N. Haddev and W. Young to lance-corporals; Ist Hutt, Privates F. Savage, J. Fordie. and E. Thomson to lance-corporals. Mr. Hill stated also that the following had been selected as “best all-round boys” for the vear: —Ist Wellington Company, Private?'W. Williams; 2nd Wellington Company. Lance-Corporal J. A. Thomas; 4th Wellington Company, Private K. Sprags: sth Wellington Company. Private H. Bryant; Ist Petone, Lance-Cor-poral N. Haddey. The King’s Badge, the highest award in the Brigade, was presented to LanccCorporal J. A. Thomas, of the 2nd Wellington Company, who received it from the hands of Mrs. Scott-MiUor. Airs. Scott-Miller presented also the following trophies won in inter-company competitions: —Ambulance Shield. 3rd Wellington Company: Signalling Cup. 3rd Wellington Company; French Drill 1 repay, 2nd Wellington Company.
