MUSIC IN THE SCHOOL
’Cello and Piano Recital At Wellesley College on Wednesday morning, Mrs. de Mauny and Mr. Claude Tanner, L.R.A.M. (Lond.), gave an hour’s recital to the staff, pupils, and a number of parents. A programme of great variety was presented, and apart from the pleasure to music-lovers, there could be no doubt as to the educational value to students of having the works of great composers interpreted by such artists. The programme opened with a group of seventeenth and eighteenth century pieces, which Mr. Tanner, who gave a running commentary on the different characteristics of each group, explained in comparison to modern music. The second, group comprised more modern music, after which came examples of the music of, different countries. Russia, France, Holland, Hungary, Spain, and Arabia contributed each an item of beauty and interest, especially the latter country, the spirit of whose music has been caught in an exquisite little solo written for ’cello and piano.by the Russian, Glazounov.
Pieces of interpretive, or expressive, music, illustrative of different emotions and characters, and also some showing the technical possibilities of the ’cello, brought the programme to a close.
Mrs. de Mauny was presented with a lovely bouquet of roses and iris made for her by the boys.
