Wireless Programmes

Sir.—“ Lover of Good Music” in stating that 2ZW should confine its programmes solely to classical music has shown an absolute failure to appreciate the public taste in this very important portion of its life. In music, as in other things, the man of to-day is modernminded, and his musical desire runs to melody and syncopation. Classical music is for the most part descriptive, and without interpretation its true value is lost. The fact is evidenced by the greater satisfaction derived from the concrete presentation of opera than that which is derived from the mere presentation of the music alone. Melody has come .to stay, and the old must needs make way for the new. It there is place for both melody and music, well and good, but to sacrifice one to the other would be selfish and puerile. Tastes do not run in harmony, and the sooner it is appreciated that the first and. foremost duty of a broadcasting station is to. give the . public what it wants the better. But by all means mix. your programmes judiciously, for what is good for one is hot good for Wellington, October 30.
