COLLEGE DEBATE

Wellington v. St. Patrick’s The annual debate between Wellington College and St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, was heard in the gymnasium at Wellington College, Mr. Peter Fraser, M.P., acting as judge. St. Patrick’s took the affirmative and Wellington College the negative on the question, “That New Zealand should considerably strengthen her Defences.” St. Patrick's College was represented by E. Morgan (leader), B. Crompton, and B. Matthews, while the Wellington College team included W. D. Longhurst (leader), P. C. R. Wells, and R. C. E. Scott. The teams were very evenly matched, and the arguments adduced on each side were very cogent, logical, and well presented. Mr. Fraser gave liis decision by a very narrow margin in favour of Wellington College, placing the speakers in this order: P. C. R. Wells, first; E. Morgan and W. D. Longhurst, second (equal). After the debate the teams and visitors were entertained at supper by the headmaster.
