RED CROSS SOCIETY

Change in Auckland Pending DEPLETION OF FUNDS The executive of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John yesterday approved of the proposed legislation to change the name of the Auckland Centre to Auckland branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. The new body will comprise representatives in equal numbers of the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John. Those present at the meeting were Sir George Fowlds, who presided, Lady Myers (representing the New Zealand Council), Lady Wigram (Canterbury), Miss I. McLean (Otago), Messrs. A. H. Bath (Canterbury), A. E. Boys (representing Dr. Collins), C. J. Ronaldsou (Canterbury), S. F. Wright (Wellington), and M. S. Galloway (secretary). Apologies were received from Mrs. L. Blundell and Mr. 11. Rose (Wellington), Sir R. Heaton Rhodes (Canterbury), the Rev. B. King (Otago), and the , Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins (chairman), A motion of sympathy with Dr. Collins in his indisposition was passed. It was reported that the funds controlled by the Otago, Canterbury, and Wellington centres were rapidly being depleted, particularly in Canterbury, and the question arose whether- the time was not at hand at which grants should be released from the “£30,900 fund” for carrying on the work. It was decided, however, that the money should remain intact until actual necessity arose. ■ The secretary reported, that £5OO had been paid over by the executive to the Joint Council of the Rod Cross and Order of St. John on July 24, but no particulars as to its disbursement had been received, ..Some centres had received their quotas and so had the St. John Ambulance Association, but no payment had been received bj* their centre, although the centre, in meeting requisitions for aid to ex-service men and their dependents from the Returned Soldiers and War Relief Assoeia* tlons, had been involved In an expenditure of approximately £46. The Dominion Joint Council is to be asked to put the matter in order.
