INCIDENTS, OBSERVATIONS
A donation of £l/17- has been received by the fire brigade’s recreation fund from Mr. R. Hardie Boys, Hataifai, for the brigade’s services at a recent fire.
A commotion was caused in the shop of Messrs. Woolworth Ltd., Cuba Street, shortly before 5 o’clock yesteiday afternon, when some tooth-brush handles caught alight. The outbreak was quickly extinguished by the staff without the services of the brigade being required.
Tenders have been called for the construction of approach steps from Bowen Street to Parliament Grounds. This new entrance will be almost directly opposite the present Bowen Street doors of Parliament Buildings. The work is to be completed before the opening of Parliament on September 21.
An inquest was held before the coroner, Mr. E. Gilbertson, yesterday morning, on Walter Albert Musgrove, aged 61, a retired schoolmaster, who was found dead in bis room at a private hotel in Wellington on August 15. The finding was that Mr. Musgrove died from heart disease. It was stated that he was born in Australia, and bad no relatives in New Zealand.
Following a discussion at last evening’s annual meeting of the Polynesian Society on the need for archaeological research in New Zealand, a resolution, moved by Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, was passed requesting the. Government to take into consideration the question of promoting legislation to prevent wanton interference with any likely source of Maori remains by irresponsible persons.
