The losses Include ten of the world’s fastest seaplanes, which were being tested before delivery to the fleet air arm. Only one was saved. The fire originated in the main office and spread so rapidly that the huge wooden building was a burning mass before the brigades could get to work. The flames rose 50 feet and were seen twenty miles away.

The Fairey Aviation Company is one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in Great Britain, and the plant at Hawble was but the experimental works and seaplane slipways. The machines destroyed are a naval type, and the Fairey Firefly, which has a speed of over 200 miles an hour. The firm is also famous for its allmetal propellers. The managing director of the firm, Mr. C. R. Fairey, is the president of the Society of British Aaircraft Constructors, and a noted yachtsman.
