TRADE WITH EAST

Opportunities for N.Z. FARMERS WANT ACTION A Horowhenua Proposal Levin, Oct. 12. At the monthly meeting of the Manawhenua executive of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union, the president, Mr. J. A. McLeavey, presided. Mr. J. Boyce was elected to fill the position of treasurer, which had become vacant owing to the death of Mr. H. Bond. • A remit from Ohau that the Farmers’ Union vote a sum of money to further the exploitation of trade with the East was read. Mr. 11. McLeavey, who brought the remit forward, said it would be a fine action on the part of the union to give a lead in this direction. They were working in the interests of the primary producers, he said, and should do something that would be of direct benefit to them. Ho suggested getting in touch with such bodies as the Meat Control Board. Holding a display of our products in the East was, he believed, behind the mind of the mover. Mr. J. T. Kent seconded the remit. The chairman stated that he had met travellers from the East who had expressed wonder as to why we had not pushed the sale of our products there. Mr. J. Hodgson, who stated that he had been in the East, said there were opportunities there which were undreamed of. The motion was carried unanimously. In the matter of railway rates for butter, Mr. Hodgson moved: “That this executive protest to the Government against the concessional railway rate on butter for distances from 175 to 340 miles being used, except for export buter, as this concession is being abused in the butter being used only for pricecutting purposes.” The mover said the cartage of butter in New Zealand at the reduced rate to enable shippers to connect up with overseas boats was being abused, particularly in the northern portion of the Manawatu, where butter from other parts was being dumped. The remit was carried.
