SHIELD HELD
But Display Not Good • CANTERBURY’S WIN Backs Very Disappointing By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, August 13. Canterbury’s Rugby representatives beat South Canterbury by 11 points to 5 to-day in the first Ranfurly Shield challenge match of the season. However, the form of the winners was by no means up to Ranfurly Shield standard. The forwards were hard working, but the backs were disappointing, chiefly owing to a lack of sharpness between the half-back and the five-eighths. Canterbury relied on the spoiling work of the forwards. There were 13 stoppages for minor injuries in the course of the play. The teams were as follow.*— Canterbury.—Roberts, Hart, Oliver, Brown, Innes, Hollow, Vincent, Andrews, Thompson, Manchester, Howell, Perkins Brown, Pease and Cottrell. South Canterbury.—Connolly, Morrison, A. Gaffaney, Ryan, Cartwright, Blyth, G. Gaffaney, Seaton, Calrd, Giddings, Adkins, J. Callanan, D. Callanan, Shewan and Duke. Canterbury played against tho sun and wind in the first half. South threw away three points when Duke kicked a penalty goal which was disallowed because a man was in front of the ball when he kicked. No score was registered in the first half, and the second half had progressed 25 minutes before Canterbury scored the first points of the njatch. Andrews charged through the loose with the ball, suddenly changed direction, cut right through the defence, and scored near the posts. Roberts’s kick failed. Oliver put Canterbury further ahead, scoring a good try on the left flank after dummying Ryan and Connolly. Roberts goaled. Canterbury 8, South nil. Andrews scored his second try after receiving the ball from a scrum, but Roberts’s kick failed. Just on time A. Gaffaney started a dash which enabled South Canterbury to score their only try. He passed' infield to Calrd, who broke Brown’s tackle and scored between the posts. G. Gaffaney converted. s The final score was: Canterbury 11, South Canterbury 5. It had been a far from spectacular game. South Canterbury were beaten in the formed scrums, but excelled in rucking. Their backs lacked a constructive scoring plan, but took advantage quickly of their opponents’ mistakes. The Canterbury attack lacked penetration and generally the play of the side was disappointing. 7 IN OTHER CENTRES Auckland.—Auckland S 4, Thames Valley 3.
