SELF-INDUCED FITS

Arrested Woman’s Practice CHARGE OF INSOBRIETY “This woman can th*>w fits at will,” said Senior-Sergeant Scott when Evelyn Nolan, a domestic, aged 44, appeared before Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday to answer a third charge of drunkenness within the past six months. A police constable said that the Free Ambulance had brought the accused to the police station on Friday night in a drunken condition. On reaching the station she at once went into a fit, and had to be taken to the hospital, where those in charge of the institution would not receive her. This was a common practice of accused, and it put the Police Department to a food deal of expense. “I only had two brandies,” said accused, “and I could hardly be drunk on that. lam not very strong and I have had a lot of trouble lately.” The magistrate convicted accused, and remanded her until Tuesday next, remarking that she was still in a shaky condition. Methylated Spirit Addict Archibald West, for having been found on premises in Taranaki Stret on Friday, was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Scott said the accused was arrested as the result of a complaint, and he was found to be under the influence of methylated spirits, a drug to which he was addicted. The magistrate remarked that a term of imprisonment would be in accused’s interests, as it would give him a chance to get the drink out of his system. Prohibition Order Breach Patrick Murphy pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and a breach of his prohibition order. He was convicted and discharged on the first charge, and for breaking the prohibition order he was fined £2, with the option of going to gaol for a week. Assault Charge Denied Frank Christie, a tramway employee, who pleaded not guilty to striking Michael Hyland, was remanded until Tuesday next, bail being renewed.
