Auckland Touring Team in Southland SMASHING FORWARDS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, August 13. On a dry ground and in bright sunshine to-day the Southland Rugby representatives defeated the Auckland touring team by 22 points to 8. Southland owe their victory to a battling forward pack. Auckland stood a fair chance up to the last half-hour, when their forwards were absolutely outclassed by Southland’s, who dominated the game and ran up their points. The game was remarkable for the number of penalties awarded, mostly for scrum infringements. Had Southland taken full advantage of their opportunities the score undoubtedly would have been much greater. Southland were first to open an account. Jamieson, the Auckland half, became bustled and Metcalfe started a movement which ended In his scoring a try, which was converted by McKay. Southland’s second score came shortly before half-time, when McKay battled his way over. The kick failed. Southland led at the interval by 8 points to nil. Auckland were without, the services of Milliken for about half the first spell owing to a knee injury. He reappeared at the beginning of the second spell. After the resumption the Auckland forwards, headed by Finlayson and Hadley, dribbled to Southland’s territory, where Milliken, going over in a tackle, scored the visitors’ first try. Heazlewood converted. A few moments afterwards Southland were penalised and Heazlewood goaled, making the scores even. The Aucklanders were now attacking hard, and Southland were busy defending, Southland then came away and Caughey forced just in time. Auckland were penalised and Porter goaled. Southland’s next try was a good one. Holden, near halfway, dispatched Mitchell, who broke through Heazlewood’s tackle and passed to some forwards, who carried on, Metcalfe finally scoring. Porter converted. Southland kept up the offensive and the übiquitous All Black Metcalfe was again over. Porter goaled. Metcalfe paved the way for Southland’s next try, passing to Geddes, who scored. The kick missed. From a scrum on the line Grant again scored for Southland, which Porter converted. Just before time a further try was scored for Southland by Mitchell, after a sharp bout. In which Purdie and Murphy had handled in turn. The kick failed.

WIN FOR WANGANUI Taranaki Side Outclassed BULLOCK-DOUGLAS IN FORM By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, August 13. Wanganui fielded a faster team both back and forward than Taranaki, and deserved to win by 24 points to 13 today. Wanganui displayed infinitely better combination in the backs, and more life in the van,, though in tight play Taranaki played with traditional virility. , In the open the advantage was always with Wanganui, and in the tight honours were in favour of the losers. Bullock-Douglas scored 11 points of Wanganui's total, kicking two penalties and one conversion, and scoring a try. Lusk scored three tries for Taranaki, and Young converted two. It wag a fast and interesting match, played in bright sunshine on a hard, dry ground. Whenever the Wanganui backs were in possession they had the pace and initiative to produce scintillating Rugby, and with two fast wingers in BullockDouglas and Brisco to complete the chain, the policy always was to get the ball away to them as fast as possible. Taranaki were handicapped by sluggish inside backs. There.was no life in the attacking ability behind the scrum. Taranaki scored first, Lusk profiting from n mis-field by Uullock-Douglas from a centring kick by Bourke. Young converted. Ejjan kicked a field-goal for Wanganui witlnu a minute. Fielding from the resuming kiek, the Wanganui forwards handled in a passing rush, Waldin scoring from a most spectacular move. Bullock-Douglas converted. The score at half-time was 9 points to 5 in favour of Wanganui. Off-side play and hanging on cost Taranaki six points just after the interval, Bullock-Douglas goaling twice from penalties. Brisco scored a pretty try from a passing rush, beating the full-back. Petty, with his pace. This made the score 18 to 5 in favour of Wanganui. Some semblance of open work then developed among the Taranaki forwards, and Walter pavetj the way for Lusk to score. Young failed to goal. Wanganui retaliated by letting Bul-lock-Douglas away, and he beat two men to score. Brisco got away a minute later, and hp scored after flashing up behind the ball that had been kicked through the defence, making the board read: Wanganui 24, Taranaki 8. Walter paved the way for Taranaki’s last try. getting into the Wanganui fiveeighths line. The Over-ready Lusk supported him. and crossed in a position which allowed Young to convert. The final score was 24 points to 13 in favour of Wanganui. MARLBOROUGH BEATEN North Otago a Fitter Side By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, August 13. After having the better of. the first spell Marlborough eracked up in the second half in their Rugby match against North Otago, and were beaten by IS points to 14. The Marlborough forwards were superior in the loose, and their backs were better individually, but the North Otago men were fitter and heavier, and controlled the ball in the serums. Cardus, Park. Harte, and Davey scored tries for North Otago, Grainger converting two. For Marlborough. Hippolite, Fairweather, and Tapley scored tries. Diack converted one, and Patchett kicked a penalty goal.
