WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Meeting at Belmont Members and friends of the Belmont Women’s Institute spent a happy afternoon at the July meeting of the institute, Mrs. Moran presiding at the meeting. Seven new members were nominated. A thrift apron made by Mrs. Irvine was chosen to be sent as an exhibit for the handcrafts section at the conference. Mrs. Richardson, of the Silverstream Institute, gave a novel demonstration of birds made from pine cones and manuka twigs and presented the institute with a fine model of a stork. Miss McLeod, of Belmont, showed how to knit a round cushion in different .coloured wools, the finished article being uncommon and beautiful. Mrs. Weston gave a lecture on chick raising, many members afterwards stating that they had gained much useful information. Hearty votes of thanks to the demonstrators and lecturer were given by all present. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mfesdames Buchanan, Angus, Huse, and Lorrett, and the “bring and buy” stall was in charge of Mrs. Irvine.
