PENNANT BOWLS

Senior Competition HATAITAI DOES WELL Seatoun Retains Lead The third round-of the senior bowls pennant competition on Saturday made a considerable alteration in the percentages of the leading clubs, but Sea-, toun, by securing four wins out of six games, retained its position at the top of the table with 72.16 per cent, wins over the three rounds. Upper Hutt went back a good deal, and Hataitai, with the best performance on the day of 80 per cent, wins, increased its percentage over the three rounds to 70, and now takes second place. Central slipped back 31 points, only winning half of the games, while Lyall Bay improved its position by three points. Petone failed to maintain its good average showing in the pennant and other games during the last month, and only recorded a little over 40 per cent, of wins. ~, , McColl, Kelburn. was responsible for the defeat of a strong rink skipped by Fielding, Hataitai, at the latter s green, and Wellings, another hard man to beat, went down to Lomas at Kelburn. Lower Hut tcame out with 62.50 per cent, wins, a decided improvement upon earlier performances, and the selection committee has apparently taken criticism to heart. Woburn fared better in securing three wins out of four games, but Island Bay crashed badly in losing two-thirds. Newtown won 50 per cent, of the games on Saturday, but require a substantial win to secure a worth-while rise on the laddefection of Plimmerton is to be deplored, and if it is impossible to raise the two rinks required, it would be better to withdraw from the pennant competition. Defaulting at the last moment means that the opponent club has two rinks who may be left on the bank, and at the best can only secure a scratch friendly game. Further, it would not be fair later in the season to play matches against some clubs after defaulting, and giving full points to other clubs Time and distance are the principal difficulties. Thorndon netted four wins out of 10, which was a little improvement. Hutton had«a sensational win of 38 —10 against O’Donnell, Wellington. at Wellington green. .
