DAVIS CUP CONTEST

Will N.Z. Be Represented? MOVE BY ASSOCIATION The annual general meeting of the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was jjeld last evening. Mr. M. E. Denniston presided over a large attendance of delegates. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet the ehairman expressed regret that more matches had not been played last season for the Nunneley Casket. He hoped there would be an improvement next season. Visits from Overseas Teams. The quarterly report indicated that the proposals were in train for an approved team of Australian ladies to visit the Dominion. The chairman said it was possible that such a tour would eventuate. Information had been received that Mr. Norman Brookes had arranged for a Japanese team to visit Australia. The N.Z. L.T.A. had been in communication with the Japanese and Australian associations for the visit to be extended to New Zealand. The association would not accept the terms of the Australian association unlese they were favourable. Tho Lovy. A recommendation by the management committee “that in view of the present financial conditions the annual subscription to be paid by each affiliated association for 1931-32, including the one penny per capita levy to be allocated for junior tennis, be threepence for every active member of such association,” was adopted. On the motion of Mr. N. A. Foden, it was made a recommendation to the incoming committee to make every endeavour to arrange for New Zealand to be represented in the Davis Cup contest, as soon as possible, provided the expense of doing so was not likely to be prohibitive. Mr. Foden said that already New Zealand had leading players in England—notably Andrews and Mayfroy, and that other players, scuoh as Stedman, might visit England. It would be a good thing for New Zealand if their services, or the services of any other players considered to be of likely calibre, were utilised. He suggested that the N.Z.L.T.A. should communicate with Mr. Woodward, the New Zealand representative in England, to see What the costs were likely to be. It would be a great incentive to rising players if the Dominion was represented tn the Davis Cup. The motion was seconded by Mr. G. Gore. Mr. H. I. Graves saw no objection to the motion going through, but he did oojeet to nominating players for the first round, and then finding there was no money to send these players forward for the second round. // In the opinion of Mr. W. N. Seay the question was important. The New Zealand cricketers had shown what standard could be reached in sport. Proposed Life Members. It was made a recommendation that Mr. W. Goss and Mr. R. G. Henderson should be made honorary life members of the associati6n . The meeting decided to place on record the services rendered by Mr. Henderson during the time he was a member of the management committee. On the motion of Mr. H. M. Boddington. it was, made a recommendation to the management committee that the services of Mr. G. Ollivier bp obtained for the purpose of coaching junior tennis players in New Zealand, and that the affiliated associations be subsidised to the extent of payment of travelling expenses. Mr. W. B. Watson drew attention to the fact that Wellington.was not credited with holding the Nunneley Casket for the season 1928-29. His motion that the incoming committee investigate the position was carried. Election of Officers.
