Reduced Outlay in France
ESTIMATES ADOPTED Competition With German/ NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN By Press AMochtton—Copyrijht (Ree. June 19, 8 p.m.) Paris, June-18. The Chamber of Deputies adopted by 410 votes to 168, the estimates for the 1981-82 naval programme, the Government accepting an amend- 7 ment halving the proposed credit and suspending the laying down of a proposed battleship of 23,000 tons. “M. Paul Boneour, on behalf of the Socialists, criticised the battleship. He said that France need not be afraid because Germany had launched the Deutschland. Italy could build a 23,000-tonner, saying qjie was responding to France’s Initiative, and France would be unable to take a bold line at the Disarmament Conference If weighed down by a battleship. The Minister, M. Dumont, said -the adoption of a battleship would not limit the possibilities of a discussion on disarmament M. Harriott resigned the leadership of the Radical-Socialists when 40 of his followers voted against the Government on the Naval Bill, contrary to his Instruction.
