Napier and Hastings ALARM OUT OF ACTION By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, March 19. A dwelling in Simla Terrace, _ owned and occupied by Mr. L. M. Rankin, was totally destroyed by fire last evening owing to the alarms being out of action owing to the earthquake. The alarm was given by motor-car and the brigade arrived only to find the house completely lost. The insurances are not available. Hastings, March 19. A five-roomed house, owned by Mr. Frank E. Smith at Hastings, and occupied by Mr. J. Lucas, was totally destroyed" bv fire at 3 o’clock this morning. Mr. Liicas and his family were sleeping in a tent outside, and were awakened by the noise of flames. The origin of the fire is unknown. The house was insured for £750, and the furniture for £250.
