TEN-SHILLING BETS

On Lawn at Ellerslie

CLUB REDUCES STAKES

Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 27. Two important decisions were made by the committee of the Auckland Racing Club at a special meeting. One was to make temporary provision for the sale of ten shilling totalisator tickets in the lawn enclosure at Ellerslie, and the other was to reduce by £lO5O the stakes for the autumn meeting to be held at Easter. At present only one pound and five pound tickets are sold in the lawn enclosure, and there has been keen interest in the question of selling cheaper tickets. A notice of motion on the subject was considered, and the committee decided to reduce temporarily' the totalisator unit for twenty windows in the lawn enclosure to ten shillings, with a view to enabling investing patrons to make investments more in keeping with the present economic conditions. Adjustments to the electric totalisator to allow of the alterations in the investment units will be put in hand at once, and will be completed m time for the Easter meeting. It was deemed advisable to review the prize money for the Easter meeting and, on the recommendation of the programme committee, the stakes for the two days were reduced by £lO5O. The races affected are the following,— Easter Handicap, of £l5OO, reduced by £250 to £1250; Autumn Handicap, of £lOOO, reduced by £l5O to £850; Hula Handicap, of £650 reduced by _ £lOO ,o £550; Brighton Hurdles, of £6OO reduced bv £lOO to £500; Onslow Stakes, of £4OO reduced by £lOO to £300; President’s Handicap, Victoria Handicap, and Islington Handicap, of £5OO eaci., reduced by £5O each to £450 each; Mangere Steeplechase., Eden Handicap, Nelson Handicap, and St. Hellers Hurdles. M £4OO each, reduced by £5O each to £3oo Ca The only handicap event that has not been altered is the Autumn Steeplechase, to be run on the second day, the stake remaining at £5OO. The programme of 16 events for the meeting is completed bv three classic races —Great Northern Champagne Stakes, of £1000,: Great Northern Oaks, of £700; and the Great Northern St. Leger, of £750.
