OTAKI ELECTORATE
Mr. Mander’s Attitude REPLY TO DEPUTATION A large and representative deputation of Otaki electors visited Wellington yesterday to wait upon Mr. A. E. Mander. Dominion general secretary of the Reform Party, with a request that he should allow himself to be nominated as the prospective Reform candidate for the Otaki electorate. Mr. Mander, in reply, expressed his sincere appreciation of the compliment paid to him and thanked the members of the deputation for having freely , expressed their views. He then, explained the democratic method by which, under the party’s constitution. Ref. rm candidates are selected. Every branch ot‘ the (>arty in the electorate is entitled to representation at an official selection conference, so that the choice of their candidates rests entirely in the hands of the Reform supporters themselves. Mr. Mander went on to say that he himself, as an executive officer of the party, could not dream of allowing himself to enter into competition with the sitting member, Mr. Field, if he wished again to be selected as the Reform candidate for the seat. On that point he felt there could be no room for discussion. But whenever Mr. Field might decide that he did not wish to come forward again he, Mr. Mander, would be pleased to accede to the request of the deputation and to allow his name, with those of other nominees, to go before the selection conference of Reformers in the electorate.
