NINE YEARS’ WORK
Rotary Club’s History “MEASURE OF SUCCESS” Most satisfactory work has been done during the nine years of its existence by the Wellington Rotary Club, whose history and activities were outlined in a five-minute address at yesterday’s club luncheon by Mr. L. T. Watkins. “I think we can review the history of the club with a quiet satisfaction and a feeling that there has been some measure of success,” he said. Mr. Watkins recalled that the club was formed in June, 1921, in a very good British atmosphere, and that at the time of its formation 50 cablegrams had been received from British Rotary clubs as well as others from Canada and Australia. The first address had been given by Sir Harold Beauchamp, who took for his subject “The Financial Outlook.” Mr. Watkins imagined that if Sir Harold Beauchamp took the same subject now he would give approximately the same address as he gave ten years ago. The club had got quickly on its feet, and its various activities soon sprang into being. The speaker mentioned the housing scheme, the boys’ work, various outings, Christmas hampers and other good work the club had done, and concluded by saying that on top of all that there was an extremely large amount which the club had subscribed to the Karitane work.
