DAIRY SUBSIDY
Favoured by Mr. J. A. Nash SUGGESTION TO CABINET Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 5. Realising the serious position of the butter market, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.. a director of the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union, communicated with the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, during the week, suggesting that dairy farmers should be provided with a subsidy. In an interview Mr. Nash said that a few years ago the Rt. Hon. W. F, Massey had given a subsidy of £600,000 toward the dairy farmers. The wheat growers were receiving a subsidy to enable them to carry on, and as it was absolutely essential to- keep the heads of the butter producers above water it was his opinion that they should receive Government aid in a time of stress like the present. He had been given to understand, he said, that his suggestion would be considered by Cabinet. Present prices for butter. Mr. Nash said, were equivalent to those ruling in 1905. From his knowledge of business he did not think that farmers could carry on with payments below 1/3 per lb.
