MELLING BRIDGE

Nearing End of Useful Life

A report on the bridge across the Hutt River at Moiling was presented to the Lower Hutt Borough Council by the borough engineer (Mr. A. G. Bush) at its meeting on Monday night. “The minimum work necessary to restore the camber of the bridge, renew the worn timber in various places and paint the iron-work will cost approximately £120,” said Mr. Bushe. "This docs not allow for wind bracing, which would enhance the safety of the bridge, but would he si very expensive matter mid not justi* tied at present.” Mr. Bush pointed out that the Melling bridge was reaching the end of its useful life and that maintenance would now be costly. The proposed repairs should make it safe for a further year if heavy traffic would abstain from using it. The works, drainage and health committee reported to the council that it Had authorised that the bridge be repaired on the lines of the engineer’s report, and the council approvd of the decision.
