, , , Maaterton, July 24. An informative talk on oil was given at yesterday's luncheon of the Masterton Itotary Club by Mr. 8, Smith. The speaker traversed the history of oil production; touching on the various methods of, refining it and other phases connected with its production.

Under the auspiees of the Wairarapa Small Holdings’ Association, and by permission of the park committee, Mr. J. Horton will give a demonstration of rose pruning In the rose garden at the Masterton Park on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o’clock. Mr. Horton will be pleased to answer any questions and give any information about the cultivation of roses. Growers of roses will find this a splendid opportunity to gain any Information they may desire to know. The billiards and snooker competition for the Y.M.C.A. Challenge Cup was advanced a further stage last night wnen the Druids defeated Daniells by six games to four. Following are the results, Druids being mentioned first In each case:— Billiards: Brown lost to Marigold; Dixon beat Allan; Kempton lost to Robson: Rowlands beat Learmonth; Miller beat Mills. Snooker: Brown beat Marigold; Dixon beat Allan: Kempton lost to Robeson; Rowlands lost to Learmonth; Miller beat Osborne.

There was a large attendance at a public reading of the play, “Mr. Pim Passes By,” given in the Municipal Social Hall last night by members of the W.E.A. PlayReading Circle. The reading was tinder the direction of Mrs. C. V. Sugden, and proved to be one of the most successful yet held by the circle. The cast was as follows: Mr. Pym. Mr. J. Mulvey; Olivia, Mrs. Sugden; Dina, Miss Dickson; George, Mr. H. C. Robinson; Brian, Mr. J. Kennedy; Lady Mardon, Miss Rodgers. The reader was Miss Darrer. The Masterton Rotary Club at its luncheon yesterday, was notified that it had the distinction of being first on the list of clubs in ifpw Zealand for having the highest average attendance during the past year. The district Governor Rotarian, Mr. Itonaldson, In recognition of the elub’s achievement, forwarded a trophy In honour of the event. The first collection for the season of calves will be made ou July 28 (Monday next) In all districts. On July 31 a collection, will bo made In the South Wairarapa and on tho main road, ana on August 4 and August 7 ,In All districts, after which last season’s timetable will bo adhered to. Last season was rather a successful one, the losses In transit bring only one pOr cent, of the total also at the point of delivery—the farm.
