FINE MAORI CARVINGS
Valuable Gift to Museum
Wanganui, July 25. ’ The Alexander Museum. Wanganui, has been presented with a fine gift, which arrived from Tawhitinui (Wanganui River) yesterday. It is the complete carving of the whakamahau (veranda) of a wharepuni. The carvings were done by Hori Pukehika and Te Ture, many years ago, and were the property of Trihapepi Parewa, a granddaughter of Te Reimana, a chief of the Te Tawhitinui, who fought against the British at the Battle of Mouton, but a year later fought with them against the Hauhaus at Ohontaki. The carvings are exceptionally good, and will be restored by a Maori artist, before they are put on exhibition.
