GARDEN FETE

The garden fete which was held in the grounds of the former Prime Minister’s residence on Saturday afternoon in aid of the Home of Compassion was not so well attended as it would have been had there not been the rival sports attractions. It was, nevertheless, a very pleasant afternoon for patrons. The gardens, thanks to the rainy summer, were green and fresh and filled With flowers, and the lawn made a pretty setting for the fete. The party was organised by the Thorndon ladies who are assisting in the street day on Friday in aid of the home, and a number of stalls were open for business. Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Bolton, who are organisers of tlie fancy goods stall, were assisted by Mrs. Hickmott, Mrs. Emerson and Mrs. Norman Crombie. Misses Emerson and Bolton had a book stall, Mesdames Mahoney and Keisenberg produce, Mrs. McParland and some of the children sold the ices, soft drinks and sweets. Mrs. Emerson and Mrs. Parkin and others were in charge of the afternoon tea, which was served in the summer house, aud a very popular stall was that devoted to competitions, run by Mr. Sharp aud Mr. Maloney, while Miss Sheridan told fortunes, so there ■was plenty of fun for all who came. Mrs. Bernard Wood, who gave her patronage and much assistance to the fete, was among those present, also Mrs. Vincent Ward, Mrs. Macarthy-Reid and Mr. and Mrs. McGrath.
