PICTON REGATTA
STAR BOATING CLUB DOES
WELL FINE WEATHER FAVOURS SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMME When the Wahine arrived at Ficton on her excursion trip yesterday an interesting and well-organised regatta arranged by tlie Marlborough Rowing Club was in progress. Races had been arranged both for the veriest beginner and the hardened oarsman, with years of experience ami a row of trophies already on his mantelpiece. All the Wellington clubs were represented —Star, Petone, and Wellington, and Star succeeded in gaining first place in the well-contested events. Unfortu; nately, Mr. 11. G. Thomas, stroke of the Star Boating Club’s junior fours, had the misfortune, on Christmas Day, to be bitten on the hand by a dog. This necessitated the scratching of this race so far asAhe Star Boating Club was concerned. All the races were eagerly watched, both from the shore and from launches that followed the competitors. It is estimated that a crowd of at least two thousand strong watched from the bays and shores round Pieton, whilst numerous picnic parties on the high ground surrounding the town gained bird’s-eye views of the regatta under ideal weather conditions.
The water, though a little choppy at times, was by no means troublesome, and what wind there was was behind the competitors. But the wind was fluky in the senior pairs, making steering troublesome. At the start of this race Wairau got off faster than the Star pair, but after a few strokes the Star pair drew ahead arid gradually took the lead. .At one time, in fact, they were about two lengths ahead. Wairau, however, kept to a steady stroke, and eventually won fairly comfortably. The Wellington Rowing Club did not do so well as was expected in the, various events. Possibly they were still feeling the effects of crossing Cook Strait, but they succeeded in gaining second place on several occasions after hard-contested struggles for victory.
The western course was used throughout the day. This course ends ou a line between a .flag on the beach near the Picton Rowing Club’s sheds and another flag on the western side of the course. The following events were run off under excellent weather conditions :— MAIDEN FOURS—I Mile. Star (F. M. Bell, st.; I. A. Cromie, 3; S. D. I. Tansley, 2; M. P. Player,'bow; R.
