NEW SOUTH WALES DEADLOCK SETTLEMENT HOPES SHATTERED WAGES QUESTION THE STUMBLING BLOCK Sydney, November 28. Hopes of a coal settlement were shattered when the council of the Miners’ Federation decided that it would not agree to any reduction of wages. This decision, if adhered to, means the collapse of the negotiations with the colliery proprietors, who Insist upon a wage reduction as the only basis of agreement. The officials of the Miners’ Federation and the Northern leaders favoured a compromise, but they were outvoted by the Western and Southern delegates. All the Southern and Western miners have been fully employed during the currency of the Northern strike, and, although paying heavy levies to the Northern .strikers, they have enjoyed a boom period, which they will not now readily forgo, especially as it would involve a slight wage reduction and possibly the diminished employment of a number of their members. The action of. the Miners’ Council has the effect of throwing the dispute back upon the hands of the Federal Government.
