ARGENTINE TRADE

PURCHASES OF BRITISH GOODS (Rec. November 28, 9.45 p.m.) London, November 27. In the House of Commons the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, Mr. W. H. Smith, informed Sir Newton Moore that the value of British produce and manufactures bought by Argentina during the year ended September 30 amounted to £2/14/per capita, compared with Australia £B/12/7 and New Zealand £l4/2/8. The Argentine had offered to halve the duties on artificial silk from Britain if the latter declined that it did not propose to tax Argentine food products. Such n declaration was expressed in the Government's policy and did not involve any formal agreement. No question of consulting the Dominions In that connection arose.
