SALE OF WORK.

A four-day sale of work, in aid of St. Joseph's Orphenage. was opened by the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) at the Concert Chamber last night. \ The Mayor, who was introduced by Mr. P. J. O'Regan, expressed his desire to help in any way possible the valuable work being done for St. Joseph's Orphanage. There were n number of orphanages in Wellington, but St. Joseph s. -with its 300 inmates, was one of the largest. Looking round, Mr. Troup said he saw much evidence of hard work and sacrifice. The work appealed to all, and those who- had not been able to give articles for sale could spend money now, and he hoped that by the end of the sale that there would be nothing left. He wished the sisters and all those who were working for the orphanage the very greatest success. A vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. J roup for opening the sale was passed. There were three stalls filled with fine needlework, some of the supper-cloths, bed-spreads, luncheon sets made by the nuns being exceptionally beautiful. All the stalls were, attractively set up. In charge of the various stalls were Mesdames Manjieripg and Hicknott and Miss McDonald : Miss Brown and Mrs. Compton ; Mesdames Keogh, Gamble, Spurway. Radonski and Scott. The sweet stall was in charge of Mrs. Burke and Mrs. Rosbotham, helped by Misses Lynch, Hoyland. McCormack and Williams. The tearoom. where an appetising supper was served, was in charge of Mrs. O Kane and Mesdames Rasmussen. Kilkelly, Fisher and Davis. The side-.sbows, where excellent business was being done, were in charge of Messrs. Carroll. Hepburn. Cabot, and Troy. Mr. O’Hanlon and Mr. Blake were at the door, and Mr. Philpott was the stage-manager. A very interesting displav of physical culture was given by the members of the Y.M.C.A., under Captain J. A. DufThere will be a matinee to-day. when games and other attractions for children will be arranged.
