YACHTING

PORT NICHOLSON CLUB The annual meeting of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club was held last night, Mr. W. Duncan presiding. The past season had been quite satisfactory, stated the annual report, the championship pennants being won by Marangi (first-class), Nanette (secondclass), Clyde (Jellicoe class), and Little Haste (18ft. class). With the exception of Nanette, which is replaced by Linnet, the same boats were successful in the club aggregates. The ladies’ race, which was contested by nine entrants, was won by Marangi, sailed by Miss Newland. The club had been successful in retaining the inter-club trophy, Wellesley I proving victorious in the competition. The Christmas ocean race resulted in a win for Nanette. Although the Clyde did. not win the Sanders Cup, Mr. Rountree is to be congratulated for his performance. The chairman, in his review of the year, expressed the opinion that the sport here was not what it should be in regard to the larger classes. But he was not disheartened because he had seen interest at a very low ebb, and those things worked in cycles. The ordinary ocean race would have to be looked into by the committee, and it would have to say whether they felt it should be held. He con-

sidered that the Sanders Cup competition is the one bright spot in the club’s year. Although they had not been successful, they had very nearly won. It was decided that the subscription should be the same as last year. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Patron, His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson); president.
