MANAWATU SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY KIA TOA WIN SENIOR COMPETITION Palmerston North, June 3. As anticipated, the Manawatu Rugby Council’s seven-a-side tourney to-day was outstandingly successful, the class of 'football displayed being much better than has been seen in the past few years. Kia Toa, who last year went under to Oriental in the senior final, accounted for that team by 11 points to 8 in the semi-final to-day, after extra time had been played, and went on to account for Feilding by 13 points to 3 in the final today The club last won the Thompson Payne Cup, the trophy at stake, in 1926. Their junior teams were also very successful, and the final was played between their A and B teams, the former winning by 6 points to 3 after an even and interesting match. St. Patrick’s, who won the Rogers Cup (junior trophy) last year, did not defend their title. The only outside team to take a trophy was the Oriental third grade seven, who beat Old Boys, last year’s winners of the Hunter Will Cup, by 6’ points to 0 in the final. Rongotea, the winning primary school team of the previous two years, were decisively beaten in the second round by Terrace End, who ultimately won the competition by defeating College Street A by 11 points to 3 in the final, and won the Boon Cup. The attendance was estimated at 4000. Results are as follow: —

SENIOR. First round: Athletic B beat Kimbolton, 10-0; Apiti won by default from Feilding B. Second round: Old Boys won by default from Athletic A; Rota beat Feilding A, 13-0; Rongotea beat Feilding Old Boys, 5-0; Hutt Beat Shannon, 8-3; Upper Hutt won by default from Kaierau; Kia Toa beat Selwyn, 18-3;' Oriental beat Ratana, 6-0; Athletic B .beat Apiti, 19-8. Third round: Feilding beat Old Boys, 17- Hutt beat Rongotea, 5-o;,Kia Toa beat Upper Hutt, 16-0; Oriental beat Athletic B, 14-11, after extra time had been played. Semi-finals: Feilding beat Hutt, 8-0; Kia Toa beat Oriental, 11-8, after extra time had been played. Kia Toa beat Feilding. Kia Tea’s victory was due to superior speed and their ability to turn their opportunities to account, and the whole team displayed sparkling football. The teams were as follow:— Kia Toa: Strange, Griffin, Mullins, Wasley, Thompson, Conrad, Crawford. Feilding: H. Darragh, G. Darragh, Cuff, Thomas, Shaplaski, C. Hight, Fitzgerald. Feildiug kicked off, Conrad returning the kick and sending Kia Toa to attack. He converted his own try. Feilding backs then threw the ball about in good style, and gained ground, but the defence held. They came hard again. H. Darragh, with two men outside him, essayed to drop a field goal, and thereby lost a golden opportunity. . Wasley received the ball midway between his own half and quarter lines and sent on to Crawford, who in turn fed Strange, the last-named capping a bright 60 yards run by scoring under the posts. Mullins converted and Kia Toa led by 10 points to nil at half-time- Kia Toa opened the second half aggressively and, Griffin, started a movement which ended in Wasley’ scoring. Mullins just failed to raise the flags. Mullins next sent Strange away, but Conrad mulled a difficult pass when iu a handy position, The Feilding backs were associated in a useful - passing bout, but Strange smothered G. Darragh’s pass .to H. Darragh on the wing. They had their reward just before the final whistle sounded, H.- Darragh crossing after half his side had handled. Kia Toa 13, Feilding 3. JUNIORS. First round: Kia Toa B beat Oroua Downs, 6—5; High School B beat United Valley, 6—3; Old Boys won by default from Massey College B; Feilding Old Boys won by default from Kiwitea B; Feilding beat West End Old Boys, 23—0. Second round: High School A beat Apiti, 29—0; Foxton beat Kiwitea A, 18— 8; Massey College A beat Rata, 11—8; Kia Toa A beat Shannon, 13—0; Kia Toa B beat High School B, 13—5; Waikanae won from Upper Hutt by default; Old Boys beat Hutt, 6—o ; Feilding beat Feilding Old Boys, 3—o. . Third round: High School A beat Foxton, 28—0; Kia' Toa beat Massey Col'lege A, 15—0; Kia Toa.B beat Waikanae, 18—0; Feilding beat Old Boys, 11—6.

Semi-finals: Kia Toa .A beat High School, 18—0; Kia Toa B beat Feilding, 13—3. Final: Kia Toa A beat Kia Toa B. Play was mainly of a close nature. A. Weston opened A’s account by picking up at halfway and making a solo effort down' the sideline to score wide out. The kick failed. The A’s now attacked on the right wing, and after a long struggle Kelly broke away to run round and plant the ball under the posts. The attempt to goal was unsuccessful. Just before the final whistle Kelly brought about a lucky try for the B’s. He followed up a long kick, and in a race for the ball touched down just inside the dead line. Kia Toa A won by 6 points to 3. THIRD GRADE. First round: High School beat Bunnythorpe B, 16—3; Rongotea beat Old Boys B, 8—0; St. Patrick’s B won by default from West End Old Boys; Tokomaru B beat Woodville, 8—0; Foxton beat Kia Toa, 11—0.

Second round: Bunnythorpe A beat Feilding, 16—0; St. Patrick’s A beat Huia Mai, 6—5; Old Boys A beat Shannon, 18—3; Hutt won by default from Tokomaru A; High School beat Upper Hutt, B—3; ’Varsity beat Rongotea, 10— 8; Oriental beat St. Patrick’s B, 14—0; Tokomaru B beat Foxton on a protest. Third round: St. Patrick’s A beat Bunnythorpe A, B—3; Old Boys A beat Hutt, B—3; ’Varsity beat High School, 11— Oriental beat Tokomaru B, IG—3.

Semi-finals: Old Boys beat St. Patrick’s A, 14—3; Oriental beat ’Varsity, 12—5.

Final: Oriental beat Old Boys. Oriental led 3 —o at half-time, Souter having scored. In the second half Milliken added another try on the wing, after a passing chain, making the final score 6 points to nil in their favour. Oriental were a very fit and fast team, and attacked strongly throughout, and Old Boys were required to do a lot of defensive work. PRIMARY SCHOOLS. First round: Terrace End beat College Street B, 25—0. ' Secbml round: Terrace End beat Rongoten, 21—0; Aslihnrst beat Milson, 3—o; Convent beat Lytton Street A, 8—0: Central B beat Manchester Street B, 9—o; Manchester Street A bent Sandon, 6—3; Hokowhitu beat Lytton Street B, 18 —0; Central A beat Newbury, 27 —0; College Street A won from West End by default. The winners were too well-trained, and although College Street battled hard, they had to acknowledge defeat. Terrace End led by 8 points to nil at half-time, Richardson and Mutch having scored, and Ward having converted the former’s try. College Street went better after half-time and Rossiter booted and followed on to score wide out. Soon after, Lang added another try for Terraco End, the score being 11—3 in favour of Terrace End. I WAIRARAPA HOLIDAY MATCHES. Masterton, June 3. A good exposition of the Rugby code was provided in the match between Wairarapa High School and the combined colleges Old Boys, at Memorial Park to-day. It was a fast, open game, both sides throwing the ball about in good style. High School won by 27 points to 13. For the school tries were scored by Traill, Uttley, Thompson, and Eastwood (2), Ball converted one try and kicked a penalty, while Uttley potted a goal from a mark. For Old Boys, Holmwood, P. Page, and Anderson scored, Holmwood and Airey each converting a try. In the fourth grade trial representative match North Wairarapa v. Bouth Wairarapa, North were successful in gaining victory by 9 points to 3. For North tries were scored by Sayers, Miller, and Carig, while for South, Cooke scored a try.
