WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP HORTON BEATS WAGG IN FINAL ... . Masterton, June 3. There were several fine performances at Lansdowne ’ Links to-day when the annual championship tournament of the Masterton Golf Olubtconcluded. , Ideal weather prevailed once again, and the links were in splendid order. Playing in the semi-finals, of Wairarapa championship, R. Wagg (Lower Hutt) beat J. Hornabrook (Masterton), 4 and 3, while Horton (Masterton) beat Campbell Heard (Masterton), 5 and 4. In the semi-finals of the Wairarapa Handicap,'Brown beat Blundell, 4 and 3, and Bennett beat Shearer, 1 up. The Group Handicap semi-finals resultedxin Collie beating Percy, 2 and 1, and Fletcher gaining victory over Taverner, 3 and 1. . All the finals were contested in the afternoon, and that of the championship was attended by a fair gathering of onlookers. The final results are as folWairarapa Championship. —T. H. Horton beat R. Wagg, 1 up (on the eighteenth h °Wairarapa Handicap.—Bennett beat Brown, 1 up. Group Handicap.—-Fletcher beat Collie, .2 and 1.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. Tn the championship match the first five holes were halved, each being done in bogey, but at the sixth Horton took the lead, Wagg missing two putts in succession. All the holes up to this had been done in bogey, both Horton and Wagg displaying steadiness in driving and in approaching, but their putting was rather weak. Horton landed next to the pm with his second •at the seventh green, Wagg being some twelve feet away, and needing two putts to Horton’s one. Horton thus won the hole. At the eighth hole both were on the green with their drives, WaRS driving to better position. However, Wagg was stymied, and the hole was halved in four (one over bogey). Both the ninth and the tenth were halved in five (bogey), and at the eleventh Wagg missed a chance to make up the leeway when he missed a short putt after haying taken three to get near the pin. The hole was halved in five. Wagg displayed weak putting on the twelfth green, and m this department of the game Horton was,, so far, superior. The hole was halved in six (two over bogey), and again owing to weak putting, the thirteenth hole was halved in four (one over bogey). Wagg secured his first win on the fourteenth creen. The fifteenth, green saw Wagg come all square. Both the driving and approaching was good as displayed by both players, but when they got to the green their strokes were poorer, Horton being slightly superior. Wagg took four for this hole and Horton five, bogey being four Horton regained his lead at the sixteenth hole, Wagg getting in the rough With his drive, but making a good recovery. Both took two to get on the> green, and Horton was nearly stymied. Horton took four to hole out and Wagg five, boaey being four. The seventeenth hole was halved in four, and both players Zrted well on the; final green, their drives, specially, being good. Wagg lipped the hole with a long putt, enabling Horton to halve the hole, and run out the victor, one up. . Following the match the various prizes won during the tournament . were presented by the club president, Mr. H. G. William's.
