WANGANUI NOTES
Wanganui, Juno 3. A Post Office regulation of great Interest in Wanganui took effect from Saturday. Late fee letters, posted to catch the south mall at the Chief Post Office, will be; accepted up to 11.45 a.m.. Instead of 11.30 a.m., as hitherto. The mail proper closes at 11 a.m., as before. Wanganui will be the centre early next year for the Combined Farmers’ Union Conference, when farmers representative of Wanganui, Wellington, Manawatu, and the Wairarapa will be present. The General Committee of the Wanganui Racing Club has appointed Messrs. Ewen Campbell nnd C. G. Russell as the clubs delegates at the New Zealand Racing Conference, to be held next month in Wellington. , ' The Wanganui City Council held a special meeting this morning to pass a resolution to mahe an order to raise £,5950 to repay the Gonville loan of £7OOO. There were 30 notifications of scarlet fever in Wanganui in May, but no other infectious diseases were notified. This week the Wanganui town bridge will be closed to traffic for a short time, to allow repairs to be made. The replacing of condemned portions of the decking, and building up sufficient crown in the centre, as well as a coat of asphalt, are on the list of necessary repairs. George Edward Allen was sentenced on Saturday at Wanganui to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, for theft of £5 from Henry Eaton. The police asked that the maximum penalty be imposed, as accused had an unsatisfactory record, and that was the third time recently that that class of theft from the person had been committed in Wanganui.
