EIGHT PRISONERS SENTENCED
Eight prisoners appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Herdman in the; bupreme Court yesterday. With the exception of one, all were called upon to answer charges of breaking, entering ana theft. . Cyril Howgate Lowry, a carpenter, aged 41, appeared for sentence on two charges of indecent assault on a female child. Mr. W. E. Leicester, on behalf of prisoner, asked for probation. His Honour replied that probation was out of the question, for prisoner had not only interfered with one child, but on a subsequent occasion bad interfered with another. The prisoner was sentenced .to nine months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. John Weir, aged 23, and Jaek Summers, aged 20, who appeared for sentence on two charges of breaking, entering, and theft, were, on each charge, ordered to be detained in a Borstal institution for a period not exceeding three years. The sentences are to be concurrent.
“You are rapidly qualifying to become an habitual criminal.” said His Honour to Edward John Mackay, a labourer, aged 35, who appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking, entering and theft at Nelson. He was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Charles William Patrick Foley, a labourer, aged 19, appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking, entering and theft. In view of the prisoner’s age, His Honour said that he would not send him to an ordinary prison, but would order him to be detained in a Borstal institute for a period not exceeding two years, A period of reformative detention not exceeding two years was imposed on James Albert Robert Bew, an orchardist, of Nelson, who appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking, entering and theft, “The crime of breaking and entering seems to be prevalent about Wellington,” stated His Honour when dealing with Daniel O’Keefe, a cook, aged 39, and William Henry Thomas, a fireman, aged 41, who both appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking, entering, and theft. O’Keefe was sentenced to two years’ im- , prisonment with hard .labour, and Thomas to eighteen months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
