FRUIT FOR EXPORT
GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE RENEWED MINISTER ON SEASON’S RESULTS The Government guarantee of eleven shillings and eight shillings on export fruit has been renewed for 1929, the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. G. W. Forbes) informed a “Dominion” representative yesterday. The Minister expressed the opinion that there was little likelihood of the guarantee for 1928 being called upon to any great'extent. Fruit prices, generally, had been sufficiently good in the last year to cover all expenses. There was no doubt that the policy of guaranteeing had enabled a large export trade to be built up. Over a million cases left New Zealand last year, and the prospects were, on the whole, good for the coming season. The position of the fruit industry to-day was largely due to the early efforts of nurserymen who had taken it up. It had its drawbacks, and had laboured under great disabilities, but the fact that 696 acres had been planted in orchard last year showed that the industry retained the confidence of the public.
