DOMINION BOWLS TOURNEY

THIRD DAY OF CHAMPIONSHIP RINKS HIGH WIND STILL DISCONCERTING

Dull weather and bowls do not harmonise.- For. the'last three days, .whilst the championship rinks have been in progress, Wellington has sufferd from one of these persistent “low pressures,”, together with its depressing concomitants —muggy, misty weather under a .pall of breakless grey clouds. Owing to the misty rain that fell yesterday morning a start was not made with the fifth round of the championship, rinks until 10.30 a.m. On that account the council decided to make the games for the day 21 heads instead of the programmed 25 heads. 1 No one was sorry to hear this as the conditions were, on the whole, not pleasant? though the wind was perhaps scarcely as boisterous as on the previous day. The following are the results of rounds 5 and 6 :— FIFTH ROUND SECTION A. Khandallah Green. Gray (Kelburn), 17; North (Te Awamutu), 16. ■ Ferguson (Balmacewan), 20; Ward (Hataitai), 18. COMMENTS ON THE PLAY

A surprise in Section B (fifth round) was the defeat of Reid (Lyall Bay) by veteran Land (Hastings). This was the latter skip’s first win. Ardell (Hataitai) added another scalp to his in the fifth round when he defeated Murray (Te Karaka). The latter is a Gisborne club player. North (Te Awamutu) suffered his third defeat yesterday when he went down to Gray (Kelburn) by a single point in the fifth round. In the same section Snaddon (Victoria), with only one previous win, scored a decisive victory overWood (V.8.A.). . The sensation of round six was the defeat of Maxwell Walker (Auckland) by T. Yates (N.S.W.). The latter player, who is a great sport and loves the game more for the fun than the victory, only scored 7 points in the third round (at Kelburn), and forfeited his game in the fourth round after a bout with Thursday’s gale. His fate seemed to be a foregone conclusion when he met Walker, but to the surprise of both sides of the Tasman the genial visitor pulled off a win in the final head. . . The only players with six wins to their credit are N, Bell (Hami ton), Dohertv .(Kelburn). and Noble-Adams (Blenheim). The two first-mentioned skips have had one bye each, sc. that Noble-Adams is the only skip with six wins out of six games, played. Tf the weather conditions to-day are similar to what they were yesterday the sanies will probably consist of 21 heads instead of 2«> heads. KORERO TO-NIGHT Bowlers are reminded of the “Ko•rero” for all tournament players to. be held in the Masonic Hall this evening. A good programme has been prepared by Mr? E. J. Hill for the. occasion, and an enjoyable social evening is assured. ■ A MOTOR TRIP To-morrow afternoon the bowlers will have an outing at the Trentham racecourse. Cars and buses are to leave the GJ*.O. Square at 2 p.m.
