A PHANTOM ARMY
PICTURE OF MARCH IN WHITEHALL (Australian Press Association.) London, November 20. Will Longstaff, the Australian artist, has painted a 9ft. by 4ft. Bin. canvas, depicting a phantom army in wartime, marching in Whitehall, passing the Cqpotaph, as a companion to the Menin Gate picture. Sombre blue-black buildings are shown dissolving into a black horizon with arc lamps shimmering on rain-slaked streets, bringing up in blue-silver relief the Cenotaph, standing out gauntly white, from which colourful flags are draping, whilst throughout the scene soldiers are delineated in bold white lines, carrying phantom banners. Lady Ryrie and the Agents-General attended a private viewing whilst the paint was still wet. Mr. Longstaff commenced painting at midday on Monday and worked incessantly, finishing the picture at 6 this morning. Colonel Williams, of the A.1.F., offered to contribute the first £lOO, hoping that others would contribute to present the picture to the Commonwealth. The suggested title is “Eternal Silence.”
