“SAVE THE SQUARE”

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL SERVED WITH WRIT CALLING OF TENDERS DEFERRED Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, November 21. The decision of the City Council to call for tenders and proceed immediately with its scheme of improvements in Cathedral Square has been met by the opponents of the scheme in the shape of litigation. Mr. George Gould, chairman of the “Save the Square” Committee, stated to-day that the writ applying for an injunction to restrain the City Council from proceeding with the erection of buildings in Cathedral Square had received the assent of the Attorney-General and was returned from Wellington this morning. “The writ will be lodged in the Supreme Court at once and served on the solicitor for the City Council forthwith.” Mr. Gould added. The Mayor (the Rev. J. K. Archer) stated subsequently that the writ had been served on the city solicitor (Mr. R. J. Loughnan’ l and he would take all necessary steps to safeguard the interests of the city. ’ ‘An endeavour will be made to get the case heard before Christmas, as we wish to know what the position’ is as soon as possible,” the Mayor added. “In the meantime the question of calling for tenders for the work will be held in abeyance.”
