ISLAND ORANGES
Sir, —Referring to the query frdm Palmerston North signed “Elector” asking for information re the wholesale rate of oranges, would you kindly allow us. as the company supplying the broadcast information, to give the following explanation :— The market rate as supplied over the wireless for oranges at 17s. was the correct rate selling that day. As we do not supply country orders it is obvious that we cannot be held guilty for sales at 225. for the country. Our sales are by .public auction and open to all wishing to participate. The Chinese buying at our sales must pay the market price, which is. of course, largely created by the demand.
Re onions: There is a decided and unforeseen shortage in onions, and .the rates given over the wireless are authentic values. Your correspondent is in error in stating that onions the previous week were quoted at 155.. the value over the wireless being £1 15s. Naturally the main idea of broadcasting market rates is to supply speedy and authentic values, and we are under a bond to supply only such information.— I am, etc., R. J. HAYES. x Manager. Market Gardeners Ltd. Wellington, October 20.
