WOMEN AND UNEMPLOYMENT

Sir. —Listening to the various speakers of the Labour Party in the present election campaign, one would suppose that the Government was and is responsible for the unemployment question. It is my opinion that the one cause of unemployment the world over is woman labour. How many of the girls who took a man’s job, so that the man could go away and fight for them, have given up their jobs on the man’s return? I am well aware that it is very necessary these days for some girls to earn money, but I do say that there is absolutely no need for married women to work; their place is at home—woman’s work is to rear her family and attend to her home. Many people now-a-days think it more important to find a job for a girl than for a boy, nad several employers, therefore, are quick to take advantage of the cheap labour which is available m woman labour. Before the war, no girl thought of going to business, unless it was absolutely necessary for her to earn her own living. I strongly maintain that these girls who are earning what is pin money only to them, are absolutely living on the sacrifice of the men who went to fight for them. No doubt the above will result jn protests against my remarks objecting to women working in men s jobs—(hat is of course, women who have no urgent need to support themselves How often floes one hear that such and. such a girl does not wish to get married, because she has such a good job.—l Wellington, October 24.
