GOLF

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCE TO-DAY

By Telegraph.-Press association. Dunedin, October 11

The N.Z. golf championship meeting opens on the Balmacewan links to-mor-row. The very dry season has made the course hard and dry, and the, greens are fiery.. The heavy rain of Wednesday night has, however, had a beneficial effect. All the outside competitors have arrived, ami have been indulging in the usual preliminary practices. The strong winds that have prevailed all the week have made play very difficult, and no outstanding returns have been made, but many of the players have shown form, indicating that there should be some highclass and interesting golf at the meeting. There are indications to-day of the weather improving.
