NOVEMBER 24 CARNIVAL PRELUDE GOVERNMENT AEROPLANE IN ADVERTISING STUNT A meeting of the Carnival Committee was held yesterday afternoon, when several matters that.are taking shape giadu ally were discussed. On Saturday, November 24, the city will be visited by several grave and reverend self-appointed judges, who will hold mock courts in the busiest places, and extract fines fiom those who can afford to pay them, all for. the good of the great ideal ahead. Between noon and 2 p.m. the two Govern* ment aeroplanes will hover ovei the city distributing interesting advertising matter bearing on the carnival. There will be 20,000 leaflets liberated from the air, and those who secure leaflets bearing certain multiple numbers will receive prizes of 10s. each. There will be £2O distributed in this fashion. It will thus be to everyone’s advantage to retain the leaflets that fall into their possession. The afternoon will be devoted to the grand Transportation pageant, which is in the hands of a very lively and efficient committee. The fun will be continued at night, but in what form has yet to be decided. The committee also decided to proceed with the idea of awarding the sum of £25 in prizes for the best practicable ideas for many raising-in connection with the carnival. This competition in ideas will close at 6 p.m. on November 1. The adjudicators in this connection will be Messrs. A. Fletcher, O. N. Gillespie, and 'F. Campbell. lii connection with this scheme the committee retains the right to use any or all of the ideas sent in. Satisfactory reports were received from the organiser regarding the activities of the various “Queen” .committees in connection with'the “Dream of Fair Women” pageant. The Transportation Committee lias already selected its queen, but as the name was subject to. the lady accepting the honour it could not be divulged;'- The Chamber of Commerce is to hold a meeting on Tuesday next in connection with the selection of its nominee,;and Labour held a preliminary meeting last evening to discuss the same business. The Sports Committee are already in harness and are preparing a big programme of events in support of its queen. Reports were also made in connection with “Education of Youth,” the "Municipal Organisations” and the ‘‘Civil Service” queen committees, so that a good contest is assured. In connection with “Education and Youth,” the University students are said to have something up their sleeves that will intrigue the whole city. Tiie parchments signed by the Tasman conquerors, giving details of their epic flight, were exhibited. Oue .of the parchments —both are to be illuminated —will be placed in the new museum and the other will be sold by auction. As an official document of an historic achievement in flight there should be the liveliest bidding for the patch of sheepskin. The proceeds will go towards the “Transportation” queen, her committee having promoted the idea. The organiser reported that the headmasters of schools met last Tuesday afternoon and decided to run a brick competition for the school children. It is just possible that the committee may be able to get the kiddies for a garden ot flowers. „ , . The Y.M.C.A. have offered their gymnastic team and will supply, men tor the League of Nations. The Y.M.G.A. have helped to fill in the cast for the League of Nations and have offered a maypole and 40 girls.
