OBITUARY

CAPTAIN SPINKS

Sydney, September 18.

The death is announced of Captain C. Spinks, formerly master of tlie Union Company’s principal vessels, aged 69. Captain Spinks was master of the Talune when she earned fame in salving the Perthshire in June, 1599, when that vessel was given up as lost with a broken tailshaft. She was discovered off Lord Howe Island ninety days out from Sydney. Captain Spinks was afterwards chief surveyor for the marine underwriters.

[The late Captain Spinks was for many years master of several of the Union Steam Ship Company’s steamers, cargo aud passenger. He was in boats running in the coastal trade, intercolonial service, and in the Calcutta trade. Captain Spinks accomplished some noted salvage feats, when, as master of tlie Talune, lie picked up the disabled steamer Perthshire, which had drifted for some weeks in the Pacific, and also as master of the Mokoia when she picked up tlie disabled steamer Monowai in the Tasman Sea.
