UNPAID TAXI DRIVER Wanganui, May 22. John Edward Weldon, alias H. A. Durant, was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with incurring a debt of £2 15s. (taxi hire) from Harry Dunstall, with fraudulently omitting to pay; on Maj’ 2. at New Plymouth, incurring a debt of £l5 for taxi hire, to Richard Kendrick, under circumstances which led the taxi proprietor to expect immediate payment; with on May 7 at Wanganui, with intent to defraud, attempting to obtain furniture valued at £437 from Purser’s, Ltd., falsely representing that he had purchased a dwelling in Peake's Road, St. John's Hill. . Leonard C. Travers, manager ol I lie Wanganui branch of Purser's, Ltd., said that on May 7 accused introduced himself to witness as a retired man from the West Coast. He asked if the firm could furnish a home lie was purchasing at St. John's Hill. Witness said the firm would be too pleased to do so, and asked accused whether he desired to discuss terms or to pay cash; He replied that he would pay cash. Witness asked to be allowed to visit the house, and accused said that he was not going to sign the contract for the house until that morning, but he would call later that afternoon. He called and said the House was in order, and he would like witness to visit it, take the measurements, and make suggestions. In regard to the New Plymouth charge accused admitted incurring the debt for taxi hire. He engaged the driver at New Plymouth to take him to Marton, where he stayed over-night. On the waj* down he called at various factories. 'The taxi brought him to Wanganui from Marton, and was told to meet accused that afternoon at an hotel, but accused did not keep the appointment. Accused pleaded guilty to the three charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
